Does anyone know how the judicial system works??Circuit Court?

I was sent a letter to me advising me of a firm court date for a wrongful death lawsuit. Now I am told it has been adjourned for another date. Can they change a firm date?? If so what could be the reasons they would do this. I thought a firm date meant it was going to definetly be heard. Can you help??
