Looking for a piece of Rachmaninoff music that I heard once-?

I went to a symphony a few years back (before I had any real interest in clical music) so unfortunately I didn't pay any attention to the name of the music I heard. However I do remember the conductor saying how the piece was originally received badly by the public. One critic said it was the music played in hell. Does anyone have any idea which piece this was?
