What was the game called? alien ... something?

plot: you are in a space ship. you were sent to some solar system. 20 years after you left earth, a faster spaceship was built that was sent to the same place, and arrived a few years before you. When you arrive at the start of the game you have to research what happened to the last spaceship as they're all dead and prepare. I got bored when nothing happened after a while of playing, as no bad guys arrived. anyone: what is the game called, and what happens if you wait long enough?
